Light Throughout The Night Chapter 14: Foursome
Posted: 2023-04-01 At: 5:30 am:

If you've reached this blog post via a search engine or through social media, I'm posting the complete book for free here as blog posts. A summery is located here.

Light Throughout The Night is a complete story with many twists and turns. The only way to feel the essence of the story is to read it from beginning to end.

Even though I'm posting the book as blog posts, the eBook is still available for sale. As a result, please don't post the book elsewhere.

Chapter 14: Foursome

Glow gave Venom the fight of her life. Nevertheless, she didn’t win. In the grand scheme of things, she won on a much greater scale.

She won in the eyes the fans. She won years before her battle with Venom. She won when she pulled herself off the streets. She won the day she met Beckie, a true friend. A friend for life. She won when she found her niche in life. Most of all, she won the day Lady became family.

After Glow’s Final Battle with Venom, she stopped competing. Every now and then she played the team sport with Lady. She stayed friends with Peaches. She made new friends. Becky visited regularly, often staying for weeks at a time.

Glow even got a job. She was hired to work with new competitors as a trainer, just like her mom was doing the day she was born.

From there, Glow met someone. She met him while training rookie competitors at the gym in the underground arena.

He snagged her with the corniest pickup line she ever heard, a professional wrestling pickup line. Moreover, a professional wrestling pickup line from the 1980’s.

Glow introduced herself, “My name is Glow. I’m here to help you prepare for Obstacle Cube Courses and Final Battles.”

The trainee responds, “I know, I’ve seen a few of your Final Battles. You’re one of the toughest chicks I’ve ever watched compete.” Glow smiled at the complement.

The trainee keeps talking, “My name is Todd. Sometimes people call me Jimmy.”

Glow replies, somewhat confused, “Jimmy? Why do they call you Jimmy?”

That’s when Todd snagged her with the punchline. “Cause, I’m Superfly.”

Glow couldn’t prevent herself from laughing, giving Todd the opportunity to ask her out on a date. Glow said yes. They went out for a late night cup of coffee. He treated her great. However, he wasn’t superfly. He dressed very casually and was down to earth.

Glow and Todd kept seeing each other. Soon thereafter, things turned mushy. He was the first guy she dated since her early 20’s.

Lady was seeing someone steadily as well. Actually, she kept seeing the guy Glow met at their apartment. Lady hooked up with him at a food distribution center.

While Lady was shopping, she kept seeing the same person after she entered each aisle. Thinking he was following her, Lady went down different aisles, zigging and zagging.

She was right. A few minutes later, he wandered into the same aisle, seemingly casually shopping.

Lady wanted to catch him trying to follow her. With a trick up her sleeve, Lady started walking out of the aisle, then did a quick turnaround. Busted! She caught him looking up to see where she was going. Lady seized the opportunity, “You’re not following me are you?”

He responds, a little startled, slightly defensive, “Who, me? I’m just shopping.”

Lady continues, “I did four zigs and four zags, through different aisles. They say, if a person does four zigs and four zags and another is still following, they’re legally following.”

Somewhat embarrassed, he replied, “Sorry, I was just looking for an opportunity to introduce myself. I’m Luis. I’ll go in the next aisle, this way I can’t possibly follow you.” Both laughed.

Then, Lady followed Luis into the next aisle. She was just as interested in Luis as he was interested in her. The two kept talking. From there, they began seeing each other steadily.

Before long, both Glow's and Lady’s dudes moved into their apartment. The twosome was now a foursome. Their apartment became their condo. The foursome purchased the apartment from the Government.

Glow was the happiest she’s ever been in her life. She knew she was very lucky to have escaped the streets. Many who end up on the streets, stay on the streets their whole life. Glow saved the prime years of her life.

Every year the foursome travel to the field where Glow lived, staying two months each year.

Glow always took her fighting fish. She cherished her fish in the same way she cherished her DVD’s and the DVD player Beckie gave her.

On the way to the field for their first visit, Glow talked about the squirrels the whole ride. She couldn’t wait to see them.

They arrived early in the morning. The squirrels were already in the field. Plenty of peanuts were still in the feeder. The squirrels were safe and out of danger.

A few recognized Glow immediately. They were much older. Their coats were much thicker and grayer. The elders rushed over to greet Glow. She was thrilled they remembered her.

The foursome didn’t stay in the field continuously for months at a time like Glow did in the past. They took regular trips to the local food distribution center. Glow always waited in the vehicle.

The same people who pretended she didn’t exist while she wandered the streets alone, would now pretend she was their best friend.

Glow still gets flashbacks from the days she was fighting for survival, flashbacks from a childhood tainted with neglect and abuse. Glow didn’t want to enter places reminding her of a past filled with grief. Lady always waited with Glow.

In the past, Lady did almost all the cooking. Now, they were in Glow’s territory. Glow cooked meals a few times a week, often cooking meals she created while living in the field.

Glow kept looking out for the squirrels in her own way. One morning after it rained, Glow pulled something out of her bag.

Lady asks, “What are those?”

Glow replies, “Flank Guns.”

Lady talks, “They’re what!? Let me see.”

Glow gives a few to Lady.

Lady continues, “Those are Bottle Rockets. Where’d you get all those? You must have over a hundred.”

Glow replies as she walks out into the field, “Nope, their Flank Guns. You’ll see.”

Glow walked to different parts of the field, sticking Bottle Rockets in the ground, connecting them via a long wick.

When Glow finished, she ran the wick behind the tent. Then, called Lady over.

Lady still didn’t know what Glow was up to, though, sensed something devious. “Gloowwww! What are you doing?”

Glow answers, “We’re gonna take out enemy aircraft.”

Lady responds, “We’re gonna do what!? There isn’t an airport within fifty miles of here.”

Glow talks, “Wait, you’ll see.”

A few minutes later a flock of Vultures enter the field, circling overhead.

“Look Lady! Enemy aircraft just entered the no fly zone. Quick, give me the lighter.”

Lady gives Glow the lighter.

A few seconds later, Glow lights the fuse.

Seconds after lighting the fuse, bottle rockets blast into the sky, echoing loud booms. The Vultures scatter, exiting the field as quickly as possible.

Glow's overjoyed with her latest feat. “Hah, I bet that’s the last time those Vultures mess with the little squirrels!”

Lady just shook her head with a smile.

During the foursome’s visit to the field the following year, Glow began building a tiny home in the spot where her tent was setup.

She wanted to make sure they always had a place to stay. She also wanted to leave something for the old lady and her kids when they visit.

Between the chicken coop, the shelves and the table, Glow became skilled at building things. Lady and their two men joined in as well. Lady also spent plenty of time revitalizing Glow’s garden.

The foursome gelled and enjoyed each other’s company in a way very few get to experience.

Sometimes they debated who would push who in their wheelchairs when they grew older. Glow felt incredible inside during those times, knowing she’d always have loved ones with her and knowing she’d always be there for loved ones.

She usually just listened. She understood the damage an extended life on the street does to a person’s body.

Street life greatly shortens a person’s lifespan. Glow knew she would be the first in a wheelchair.

In a way, those thoughts caused her to smile inside, knowing the others didn’t live through the things she experienced. Those experiences caused her to enjoy every second she was spending with her family.
