Hello, I saw a few weeks ago people saying that the old Guardian thread was getting difficult to find as it was more than 2 years old or similar. I suggested starting a new one.So... Here is a new thread for this year (and maybe even 2027 too). 'Hope nobody minds too much.Anyway, without further delay, here is the quiz. Enjoy!:https://www.theguardian.com/lifeand...uiz-general-knowledge-topical-news-trivia-229A very modest 9/15 for me...Read more

Reading a very informative book about the history & develpoment of high street shops, came across the title of this thread.Apparently, in 1961, some bakers in Chorley Wood developed the above by adding more fat, extra 'ingredients' and using low grade British wheat flour were able to produce a white loaf which from ingredients to finished, packed end product could be done in less than four hours, much faster than the traditional methods. This then gave us the soft, bouncy cheap white bread...Read more

i have a 20km each way (ie 40 round trip) ride.i do it in about an hourlooking for tips to go faster , and also regarding luggage!and also regarding how to balance it with rest of life , since adding the shower and changing clothes it adds up to 1.5 hrs each way , and my legs are always tired , so not sure how to optimise / improve...i have started getting off the bike to run with it on some up hills just to have some variety!

A thread specially for 'persons of leisure' and independent means, or those with aspirations. How do you while away those lazy days? How do you cope financially? When did you retire? Is retirement what you expected? How long did you take to adjust?Etc.Tell us what you are up to today or what plans you have.Or just have a bit of silliness to while away those lazy hours.I've been busy today. Hilly 15 mile ride in North Devon, took dog for a stroll along Saunton Sands, cut the front lawn...Read more

Bent the front mudguard on my commuter bike recently so just fitted a new one using the fixings from the old one which had already been bent around to suit the disc brake. This was achieved using:Tool kitKitchen as workshopMug of teaRock and roll on the stereoMinimum swearing

Wondering if there's sufficient interest on here to keep a thread going on what wildlife we've come across during the day, out on the bike, in the garden, from work, whatever.Recent encounters for me were a ladybird on Sunday and a sparrowhawk on my way to work yesterday.

It appears that motorists don't appreciate my Road Tax jersey or at least I had far more close passes today then any other day for a few months. I saw my first 'bent out in the wild. Obviously I've seen them before but this was the first time it belonged to someone I didn't know. Strange design too, very long wheelbase with what looked like a normal headtube over the front wheel, steered from underseat but the front wheel was a long way from the rider. More and more helmet wearers that...Read more

Mine was so good. (I did go for that ride...glad i did)Just over 20 miles, but since the rear ends a bit sore...Suns been shining here all day, 13 or 14 degrees, 15 mph winds made it a bit slow on the outrun, but fast home (20 -25 mph for 6 miles ). Very very glad i went....now i feel guilty about feeling good How was yours....

I am considering buying a Pocket Rocket folder: But I would like to hear from anyone - Richard? - who has one to give me some idea how it compares to a regular bike in terms of handling. The gearing is the same as my Scott Carbon but does weigh more, about 6 lbs: Scott 16 1/2 lbs, Pocket Rocket 23 1/2 lbs.How does it handle hills? Clearly with my 700's on the Scott compared to 20" wheels on the Rocket every rotation of the pedals is going to take me less distance so I will have...Read more

There's a little thing that doesn't bother us at first, like a little foible we find endearing in a loved one until it grows beyond tolerance and makes you want to plunge a red hot poker into thei......but then becomes a MAJOR annoyance. I'm going to go for the trivialest (is that a word? It is now!) thing that causes the most annoyance; i-pod and i-pad. Not the items themselves but their words! They are TOO similar and inevitably lead to you saying one when really, you are trying to say...Read more
