It appears that motorists don't appreciate my Road Tax jersey or at least I had far more close passes today then any other day for a few months. I saw my first 'bent out in the wild. Obviously I've seen them before but this was the first time it belonged to someone I didn't know. Strange design too, very long wheelbase with what looked like a normal headtube over the front wheel, steered from underseat but the front wheel was a long way from the rider. More and more helmet wearers that...Read more

A thread specially for 'persons of leisure' and independent means, or those with aspirations. How do you while away those lazy days? How do you cope financially? When did you retire? Is retirement what you expected? How long did you take to adjust?Etc.Tell us what you are up to today or what plans you have.Or just have a bit of silliness to while away those lazy hours.I've been busy today. Hilly 15 mile ride in North Devon, took dog for a stroll along Saunton Sands, cut the front lawn...Read more

I have a huge selection of cycle and motorcycling travel books in my collection but I have recently bought a book that I have wanted for a while. Sixty-Six Years As a Cycle Tourist by Cliff Pratt. ISBN 1-85821-229-4Cliff Pratt is the Mr Cycling of my home town of Hull and started his bike shop in Hull in 1934. The shop is still going strong and I believe has just moved to new premises. The book covers cycle touring from the 1930s onwards and includes trips to Norway and the Dolomites...Read more

I have been shy about trying it.Going by the average speed with my new computer of about 5mph it would take 3 hours each way approx.Would have to not tarry much at all in the morning and not much room for unforeseen extensions to the journey which, from experience, can happen quite easily, particularly for new routes.I suppose one can talk themselves out of doing something or talk themselves into doing something but it is about weighing things up.

"Entry-level." I hate that term! Before Bicycling magazine foolishly shut down its forum and dumped tons of great posts from a few super knowledgeable members, new people often came in asking for advice on what to buy for $xxx (some ridiculously low price), saying, "I don't want to spend much until I find out if I'm really going to like cycling and stick with it." Then they'd ignore our advice and go buy something cheap, usually from a department store, something that was sluggish...Read more

What drop bar brake levers would be a good match for Avid BB7 brakes? To be clear, I mean non-STI, brake only levers. I think, by which I mean I am lead to believe, that the BB7s mechanical advantage is best matched, in Shimano land, to the "old" pre NSSLR standard. Which I guess means there might be lots of old style/retro/used/NOS things to choose from. Ideally I'd like ones where I don't have to mess around putting the cable under the bar wrap.Especially interesting would be ones with a...Read more

Is it their limited appeal in the market? Build costs? Need for extra-tough frames and components etc.?Don't get me wrong, I'd love to own one, but I remember years ago seeing a CC thread about the Dutch cargo bikes used to take kids to school etc. and the cost ran into multiple thousands of pounds. I think it was these ones - https://www.bakfiets.com/Have prices come down at all over the years or are cargo bikes always going to be that bit more expensive than traditional bikes do...Read more
